Maiya Joy is five pounds of pure love. She went on her first visit today to a long-term skilled nursing facility and was a huge hit.
We met outside so she could become familiar with the building and area where she would go potty.
She walked around the lobby and said hello to the receptionist.
She signed in the Volunteer log!
Then she made her way with her Mom, Jennifer, so they could wash up before beginning client visits.
And then they started down the hall and it took about fifteen minutes just to get from the front door to the first client as everyone stopped her along the way.
“Is that really a dog? She is so small. What kind of dog is she? Can I hold her”
And this was the Staff stopping her!
She wagged her tail and leaned in nice and close. She did a bit of walking and a lot of being carried as she is so small.
She likes to be nose to nose with people so the higher up the better!
She lied down on her towel on the bed so people could reach her and snuggled in. She is not nearly as fragile as one might think. She was very happy being petted and held and cuddled.
She rested and watched as more experienced Kirby “worked” and loved being with him – I think she has a crush on him!
She made her way to about a dozen people before taking a much needed break.
All in all this was a tremendously successful first visit.
