Rygambo, also known as Gummy Bear, made her first appearance at the Boulder City Hospital today and was a tremendous hit with the residents.
Delta Society evaluates and registers many species and Gummy is the first Thoroughbred working in Las Vegas and Boulder City in this capacity – as an animal-assisted therapy horse. Not only did she pass her evaluation but at the highest level, Complex.
She spent the morning being bathed and brushed and enjoying her time with her owner and handlers. Then she went for a brief ride in her trailer and walked easily through the parking lot to the designated visiting area.
There were so many residents who wanted to meet her, pet her and give her amazingly wonderful treats! Carrots, apples and peanut butter sandwiches were the order of the day for Gummy!
Even the shiest client found the strength to walk or wheel up to greet her and give her a nibble or touch. Gummy especially enjoyed the tickles!
What a special visit this was for everyone, staff, volunteers and especially the residents, many of whom had known horses through their lives and had an opportunity to reminisce and remember things from years gone by.
What was the goal for the day? To bring about sense memory, to put a smile on faces, to explore new experiences and to create new memories.
Thank you Sandy for sharing your beautiful horse with everyone.
