No one really knows when Kirby’s birthday is.
He can’t tell us.
But today, May 23, is the day I adopted him so that is his birthday to us.
It feels like Kirby has been my best boy for so much longer than three years.
He is a wonderful partner in our therapy work and a wonderful guide through life as I see how strong and determined he is to have a valuable life.
Kirby’s story can’t be told without first recognizing Coco’s amazing life.
When Coco was twelve years old we started thinking about bringing another dog into the family.
We wanted a little boy.
A boy who was smart and funny and sweet and kind.
A boy who couldn’t find a new home and needed us.
A boy who could love Coco and understand her limitations and be very gentle with her.
A boy who could learn from Coco and become a Love Dog.
We were told about Kirby.
He was a little boy with some health problems that needed a very special home.
Coco wanted him right away as her brother.
So Kirby joined our family and the first week he needed some surgery. He had eleven bladder stones removed.
That’s when I realized just how strong this skinny little guy was.
And how old he may actually be.
Our vet thought he had to be around seven or even eight.
Then he had some eye surgery and a few other tweaks that made him feel stronger and each time I asked “ How old do you really think he is?”
And each time he seemed to get older!
Each year brought many visits to the doctor, more surgeries, more healing and more joy to our family.
He loved Coco and helped her through the last year of her life. So when we lost Coco two years ago I couldn’t believe they had only had a little over a year together.
But Coco had done her job well and Kirby now was the most perfect Love Dog.
He especially loved going where no other dogs could go – with very special children and adults and he made everyone feel they could be the best they could be as he continued to be his best dog.
Kirby was very sad when we lost Coco. He went into her Condo in the living room and snuggled in her blankets.
Kirby is the kind of dog that never complains but just gets on with the business of life.
So when we heard about Benny he was all for it. He came with me to meet this poodle that kept being returned to the rescue.
This young poodle that couldn’t find his place in a family.
In the world.
Kirby is the one who helped unlock Benny’s demons.
Now two years after Benny joining our family, Kirby is still Top Dog in our home.
Benny still has his “crazy moments” as we call them, but Kirby takes it all in stride.
He has come through recent knee surgery with flying colors and is running now as he never did before.
He has some puppy back in him!
So today as we celebrate what we think is his tenth or eleventh birthday, but we know is his third year with us —it is hard to imagine ever being without him.
Happy Birthday Kirby — and many, many, many more!
