Kirby came home today. This knee seems to be a more difficult healing than last time. He cannot find a comfortable position with the cast and cries when he tries to sit or lay down. He refused to walk at first but soon learned to hobble on three legs.
It is very challenging for him to go to the bathroom. Often after having been on morphine, the dogs get diarrhea and he did! And as soon as he pooped, he fell down in it and got his tushy all dirty! Even though I had put the plastic bag over his cast so he couldn’t get urine on it, of course he now got a little fecal matter on it so I had to wash that as well.
Kirby will be on pain medication and antibiotic for a while and not able to work until the stitches are removed and he gets the go ahead from his doctors. Today Benny will cover for him and we will see if our clients want to make Kirby get well cards – I think they will like that.
Next Saturday is a Pet Partners Workshop and it will be the first without my own dogs there as demo dogs. Little Kirby was always the very best at the Workshops and loved showing everyone how to handle a small dog. But this time he will stay at home and Benny will keep him company.
Next step is to have him eat as he has not eaten since the surgery. I will mash up a very small amount of his food with water and see if he likes his new “soup.”
Then next week the cast comes off and he is sure to be more comfortable and hopefully start putting the leg down and walking on all four legs.
And once the stitches come out the following week he should be ready to begin serious rehab.
Today was one of the very rare days I heard Kirby cry but he is now sleeping in his bed so I know being home will make him heal much faster.
Kirby will miss working and everyone will miss him.
