It is so hard to believe Benny will be four years old this month. It seems like just yesterday I brought Monster Boy home … and he sure was a monster!
He barked endlessly for hours. He moved his crate across the room. He howled when left alone. He pulled on the leash so hard I thought this fourteen pound poodle would drag me down the street.
He was uncontrollable, unbearable and unhappy.
But he was not unloved.
The moment I met him as a trainer brought in to consult with this poodle no one wanted, I knew I had to have him. Four families returned him to the rescue in his first year of life … they said he was unteachable.
But I think he was just waiting for Kirby and me, a family that could see the sweet boy inside the monster.
Benny became the most natural therapy dog, loving to go to work more than anything. He has the “it” factor Coco had.
He doesn’t even look like the same dog I met years ago. His whole demeanor and face has changed and his eyes have softened.
Once we learned to trust each other, training came easy, and fast. He learned everything I could teach him and then he started teaching me!
He taught me to open my mind as to what a “good dog” was.
He taught me to love past the problems.
He taught me great patience and even more patience!
He taught me that dogs really do live in the present and today is always the best day.
He taught me that when you think you could never love more, you do.
