April is Autism Awareness Month and today is World Autism Awareness Day, in honor of all children and adults who struggle daily with the challenges of ASD.
Autism prevalence is now one in every 88 children in America.
In order to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism, the Autism Society has been celebrating National Autism Awareness Month since the 1970s. The United States recognizes April as a special opportunity for everyone to educate the public about autism and issues within the autism community.
The Love Dog therapy program has been privileged to get to know children and adults living with autism and understand the value of having the dogs as part of the therapeutic goal.
When the right dogs and the right handlers are brought into the loop, breakthroughs can happen over and over again.
The dogs are able to touch a piece of the spirit and soul that humans cannot. Perhaps it’s because dogs speak best when silent and so do some of the children and adults we have met. They relate to body language, intent, eye contact, expression so much better than the spoken word. And so do dogs.
Trust – so critical to the connection to humans or animals.Trust – earned over time
Trust – once gained opens the door to everything else
Thank you to our friends living with autism who have taught us so much about humility, humanity and love.
