Petey’s journey to Love Dog begins

The first day Petey was with us I put a collar and leash on him. I wasn’t sure if he was too tiny and would need a fabric harness but guess what? Kirby’s collar fit him with just a little tightening!

I walked him around the house and he followed perfectly. He already knew how to walk by my side and stop when I stopped.

The added bonus was he would wag his tail when I said Stop! He liked this new game. Start and stop, start and stop!

Then I took him outside and he walked well and peed at Kirby’s favorite spot. This was a bit odd but I figured the smell was still there.

Then I wanted to see if he could Stay. The best way for this I thought as he is so small was to put him on a chair and walk away. Did he get up and try to jump? I couldn’t allow that. But he stayed wherever I put him and stuck like glue!

I will graduate him to Stay on the floor as soon as he has learned Sit and Down.

I had “retired” Kirby’s blue blanket that we used for Place. I think Kirby would permit us to have Petey use it so out it came.

I used it in the car seat when we went to the Vet for his exam. I put it up on the exam table and when at home I put it in his bed and kennel and my lap or wherever he is at the time.

I was very interested in seeing how Petey was with all sorts of people. So when our groomer came to care for Benny, she brought her son with her. And this was exactly what Petey needed.  He loved meeting this little boy and the two of them had a grand time while Benny was being coiffed!

Petey rolled over for belly rubs and the best moment was when he truly looked at this sweet boy with such love and joy.

My heart swelled … yes, Petey has the Love Dog in him for sure.

Benny is getting used to having him around. I have to manage them so Benny does not think he is a toy and want to play with him. But after only a couple of days Benny had learned to come up, sniff and be slow and gentle.

Benny is going to work for the next several days and be very busy so this extra attention will be good for him.

Follow Petey’s journey to becoming a Love Dog … and Benny’s to becoming a big brother again.
