The Love Dogs have partnered with a Las Vegas elementary school for several years now and today we had our first day back in school. We bring an education program to the class every other week throughout the entire school year.
The second grade class we meet with had heard they would be meeting the Love Dogs and were all so excited. But they had already been told the classroom rules and were prepared to be calm and gentle with the dogs.
Tiffany brought George, Leslie brought Dash and I had Benny. We also had several volunteers to help out. We were in a new classroom this year with a new teacher, but it went so smoothly you would think that everyone had worked with the dogs forever.
Everyone loved meeting the different breeds and they were very interested in learning how to greet a dog safely. Each child practiced asking if they could pet the dog, letting the dog sniff their hand and then petting the dog where the owner suggested.
At one point Dash looked like he was sleeping but quickly turned towards the story that was being read to him. And George just lay down facing towards the class and let everyone admire his gentle strength.
Of course Benny snuck in a few gentle kisses!
We spent half an hour having a classroom lesson and then half an hour reading stories to the dogs. We broke out into smaller circles around the dogs. With twenty three students in the class, we can easily have up to six or seven dogs in the room so we will introduce new dogs each session until the room is full of dogdom!
This is one of the Love Dogs’ favorite programs and we are so welcomed in the school and class.
Thank you everyone for making today such a rousing success.
