How Petey Got His Bark Back

Petey was such a quiet little dog

Petey was such a quiet little dog

Petey was eleven years old when he went to live with his new family.

He was very nervous and hoped they would like him and want to keep him.

He had another home once but they thought he was too old.

Petey didn't know what to do without teeth

Petey didn’t know what to do without teeth

Petey didn’t really understand why he was going to a new home.

He always tried to be a good dog.

A kind dog.

A nice dog.

Petey liked that.

She even brought another dog to meet him, Benny.

But he was very happy when he met his new Mom.

Petey liked when his new mom held him real close

Petey liked when his new mom held him real close

She seemed very friendly and she held him very close.

She told Petey that Benny was his new brother.

It’s good to have a brother, thought Petey But Petey was a different kind of dog.

He was very skinny and his hair was very thin and his eyes didn’t work very well and he had no teeth.

Petey had no teeth but he could smile!

Petey had no teeth but he could smile!

That’s right!

Petey had no teeth.

So he had to eat very soft food.

And sometimes it was hard for him to find a good place to put his tongue!

When Petey went to live in his new home, Petey was very quiet.

Benny thought Petey was a very funny little dog

Benny thought Petey was a very funny little dog

He never barked like other dogs.

No one knew if he could bark without teeth.

For four months he was silent.

Not a peep out of Petey

But Petey heard his brother Benny bark all the time.

Benny sure knew how to bark!

Benny sure knew how to bark!

“Woof, Woof,” said Benny when he was hungry.

“Woof, Woof’ said Benny when he was thirsty.

“Woof, Woof’ said Benny when he needed to go potty.

But Petey had lost his bark.

Then one day something really wonderful happened.

“Eeck, eeck,” heard Petey’s Mom.

“What’s that?” she thought.

One day a little squeak came from Petey's mouth

One day a little squeak came from Petey’s mouth

“Well, Petey, I do think you are trying to say something.

“Do you want a treat?” she asked.

But Petey just sat there.

“Do you need more water?” she asked

But Petey just sat there.

“Petey, do you want to go out?” she asked and showed him his leash.

Petey started doing a little dance while repeating “Eeck, eeck”

Yup, that's what Petey was saying

Yup, that’s what Petey was saying

And yes Petey had to potty. So once Petey got used to having no teeth and finding a good place to put his tongue, he was able to make sounds.

Very little squeaky sounds.

“Eeeeeckkkkkkkk!”

But very soon the “Eeck” became a “Woof” and Petey sounded just like any other dog.

Soon Petey knew how to make all kinds of sounds

Soon Petey knew how to make all kinds of sounds

“Wooooooffffffff” he said when he was hungry.

“Wooooooffffffff” he said when he was thirsty.

“Wooooooffffffff” he said when he needed to go out.

When something is hard to do, you just have to practice over and over and over again.

So Petey found his bark and was happy ever after

So Petey found his bark and was happy ever after

And that’s how Petey got his bark back!
