One child, one dog

When you create custom protocols for animal assisted therapy, every visit is different and you are always learning something new – about the client and about your animal.

Reading to Benny

Reading to Benny

Today Benny met with the young boy he sees regularly and today we found out the child could read very well. He has difficulty with his speech, but his reading is very good. So he read a story about his friend Benny. Then he brushed Benny and helped him get a treat out of his new treat toy.

He even opened the zipper on his Pet Partners vest – quite the task.

What I learned about Benny is that this is what he was born to do. Even when we ask nothing of him but to be a calm presence next to the child while he works on other tasks, Benny is happy. Benny never moves, makes a fuss, craves attention. He is happy to just be and understands his role changes moment by moment.

As Benny slowly returns to work, this is HIS therapy – one boy, one dog, one moment.
