Benny wasn’t supposed to work today. But mid-day he gave me that look and walked over to where his Pet Partners vest is kept. He just so wanted to go somewhere. So we went to a favorite rehab center and had no idea who would be there. I had never gone on a Friday before and never at this time late in the day. But I know we are always welcome.
When we arrived, one of the therapists saw us and said right away “I know someone who would really love to meet Benny,” and she brought over a young teenager. Usually we only see adults here but for some reason on just this day at just this time this girl was there and she desperately needed to know Benny.
We spent almost an hour together and she heard all about his year of challenges and she shared hers with him. She saw how he learned all over again to do many things and she shared with him how she is learning to do things in new ways. We walked alongside her as she wheeled back to her room and the two of them settled in.
She cuddled him with her good arm and was so peaceful and kind and gentle with him. And he just melted into her. At one point it was getting a bit late for him, so he put his head in her lap and almost fell asleep!
I thanked this young girl for making my dog so happy and they both felt fulfilled. What a remarkable Friday afternoon. And I now know why Benny WAS supposed to work today.
