How Petey Got His Bark Back

Petey was such a quiet little dog

Petey was such a quiet little dog

Petey was eleven years old when he went to live with his new family.

He was very nervous and hoped they would like him and want to keep him.

He had another home once but they thought he was too old.

Petey didn't know what to do without teeth

Petey didn’t know what to do without teeth

Petey didn’t really understand why he was going to a new home.

He always tried to be a good dog.

A kind dog.

A nice dog.

Petey liked that.

She even brought another dog to meet him, Benny.

But he was very happy when he met his new Mom.

Petey liked when his new mom held him real close

Petey liked when his new mom held him real close

She seemed very friendly and she held him very close.

She told Petey that Benny was his new brother.

It’s good to have a brother, thought Petey But Petey was a different kind of dog.

He was very skinny and his hair was very thin and his eyes didn’t work very well and he had no teeth.

Petey had no teeth but he could smile!

Petey had no teeth but he could smile!

That’s right!

Petey had no teeth.

So he had to eat very soft food.

And sometimes it was hard for him to find a good place to put his tongue!

When Petey went to live in his new home, Petey was very quiet.

Benny thought Petey was a very funny little dog

Benny thought Petey was a very funny little dog

He never barked like other dogs.

No one knew if he could bark without teeth.

For four months he was silent.

Not a peep out of Petey

But Petey heard his brother Benny bark all the time.

Benny sure knew how to bark!

Benny sure knew how to bark!

“Woof, Woof,” said Benny when he was hungry.

“Woof, Woof’ said Benny when he was thirsty.

“Woof, Woof’ said Benny when he needed to go potty.

But Petey had lost his bark.

Then one day something really wonderful happened.

“Eeck, eeck,” heard Petey’s Mom.

“What’s that?” she thought.

One day a little squeak came from Petey's mouth

One day a little squeak came from Petey’s mouth

“Well, Petey, I do think you are trying to say something.

“Do you want a treat?” she asked.

But Petey just sat there.

“Do you need more water?” she asked

But Petey just sat there.

“Petey, do you want to go out?” she asked and showed him his leash.

Petey started doing a little dance while repeating “Eeck, eeck”

Yup, that's what Petey was saying

Yup, that’s what Petey was saying

And yes Petey had to potty. So once Petey got used to having no teeth and finding a good place to put his tongue, he was able to make sounds.

Very little squeaky sounds.

“Eeeeeckkkkkkkk!”

But very soon the “Eeck” became a “Woof” and Petey sounded just like any other dog.

Soon Petey knew how to make all kinds of sounds

Soon Petey knew how to make all kinds of sounds

“Wooooooffffffff” he said when he was hungry.

“Wooooooffffffff” he said when he was thirsty.

“Wooooooffffffff” he said when he needed to go out.

When something is hard to do, you just have to practice over and over and over again.

So Petey found his bark and was happy ever after

So Petey found his bark and was happy ever after

And that’s how Petey got his bark back!

PETEY GETS A NEW FAMILY

The first photo that warmed my heart

The first photo that warmed my heart

Petey once had a home, for a very long time – almost ten years.

But his people decided he was getting too old and they didn’t want him anymore.

They took him to a shelter and just dropped him off

Petey learning to walk on a leash

“We don’t want this dog anymore,” they said.

Petey was very sad.

And confused.

So Petey started looking for a new mom.

Petey's tongue falls out when he sleeps

Petey’s tongue falls out when he sleeps

Someone who understood that old dogs could be great dogs.

But Petey was a different kind of dog.

He did not have any teeth!

Nope, not one.

So it was hard for him to eat his food.

Learning to Sit and Stay on his favorite chair

And sometimes his tongue would fall out of his mouth.

People thought he was an ugly dog because he had no teeth.

But one day a nice lady saw his picture and said

“That’s our new dog, Benny”

She took Benny to meet this new dog and boy was he little!

He weighed only four and a half pounds!

But Benny liked him too so they adopted him.

Petey now came to live with Sue and Benny and he wasn’t sad anymore.

He went to a new doctor and guess what?

Petey';s new doctor at Town Center Animal Hospital

Even though he was tiny and had no teeth, he was healthy.

His new mom gave him very soft food and he ate with a big appetite!

He liked having a brother and Benny was very happy to have Petey join his family.

Petey’s new mom took him to a doctor and he was a very smart little dog. Yes he had no teeth but he could hear well and his little legs and hips were healthy.

Benny and his new brother - sure looks like Kirby!

Benny and his new brother – sure looks like Kirby!

Petey, the old dog no one wanted was now living in a new home and learning new things.

Like how to walk on a leash.

How to Sit and Stay

How to Down and Stay

Petey loves everyone with a full heart

Petey loves everyone with a full heart

But no one had to teach Petey how to LOVE

Because Petey was born to be a Love Dog … a Therapy Dog.

Petey is the greatest little dog and will make a super Love Dog

Petey is the greatest little dog and will make a super Love Dog

His journey begins NOW!

THE MANY FACES OF BENNY

Benny was a scared dog when we met

Benny was a scared dog when we met

When I met Benny, he had a very different face

He never looked you right in the eye

He always looked at you out of the corner of his eye

Other dogs made fun of him

Benny had been groomed with poofs on his feet!

Benny had been groomed with poofs on his feet!

Because he had a funny haircut

Because he was always putting his head down

And turned away from everyone

Because he curled up in a ball

Even when he was sharing the stroller with Kirby

People made fun of him

Because he was afraid of the leash

Because he didn’t sit like other dogs

Benny held a treat in his mouth forever

Benny held a treat in his mouth forever

Because he liked to hold his treat in his mouth before eating it

Because when he lay down his legs spread out flat behind him like a pancake

Some people thought he was a bad dog

They thought he barked too much

Benny ducked low in the stroller

Benny ducked low in the stroller

They thought he was stupid

But he was just misunderstood

Have you ever been misunderstood?

Have people ever thought something about you … that you knew wasn’t true?

Benny was so misunderstood

Benny was so misunderstood

That’s what Benny was – misunderstood

While some people thought he was UNFRIENDLY, he was really SHY

And while some people thought he was MEAN, he was scared

Benny sat differently than other dogs

Benny sat differently than other dogs

And while some people thought he was STUPID, he just learned in a different way

And while Benny did not think he was worthy of being loved… Sue and Kirby knew he was

Benny could not learn if you yelled at him or said something over and over and over again

But Benny wanted to trust people and be a good dog

But Benny wanted to trust people and be a good dog

Benny learned best when you were PATIENT with him

And gave him lots of praise and

Told him he was a Good Boy

When Benny heard praise he LOOKED UP and straight into your eyes

With LOVE and TRUST

That’s how Benny’s face changed

The meanness and fear left his face and he SMILED

And when he SMILED people thought differently of him

They saw his beauty and joy and love

And people and dogs did not misunderstand him anymore

Benny learned how to be a happy dog and loved his brother Kirby

Benny learned how to be a happy dog and loved his brother Kirby

Benny is the most natural therapy dog

Benny is the most natural therapy dog

Because he was now a LOVE DOG

Dashing Dash and How He Found Just the Right Home for Him

My name is Dash and I have a very interesting story to tell

I was born in 2006 in Arizona.

My first owner had many big dogs and she thought they could hurt me because I was so small and fragile.

So she gave me to her neighbor and her two little boys.

They were very nice people and I loved the little boys but they had never owned a dog before … and certainly not a dog like me!

Leslie and Dash

Leslie and Dash

I am an Italian Greyhound and we are very special dogs indeed. We can run very, very fast but we are not the easiest of dogs to live with.

My first family left me alone for many hours, too many hours, every day.

I missed my family so much it made me very sad.

One day a very nice lady came to visit. She lived next door and had seen me and knew I was left all alone all day and night.

She offered to come take me for walks during the day and that’s how our friendship began.

Soon I was spending the night with my new friend, Leslie, and I wondered which family was my REAL family?

I went back to my two little boys sometimes but I started thinking of Leslie as my forever Mom.

She gave me treats and a nice place to sleep and seemed to love me a lot.

Dash learned to be a Love Dog

Dash learned to be a Love Dog

Leslie had many pets and loved them all.LIKE SPOOKY

AND DADDY

AND TYLER

AND SAM

But she made room for me.

She never made me feel like I didn’t belong.

She loved Sheba, a twelve year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix but soon after we met, Sheba passed away.

I am the most handsome Iggy!

I am the most handsome Iggy!

Leslie was very sad.I tried to cheer her up because Italian Greyhounds know how to be silly!

Leslie had never had an Italian Greyhound before and she tells me it was very hard to potty train me!

And sometimes I wanted to stay in bed all day!

She also tells me I always liked to burrow under things – that’s what Iggy’s do – they like to be UNDER things.

And I also liked to go OVER things, even my sister

And she tells me I did not like to SIT!

Or lay DOWN!

Unless I was VERY TIRED

Then as the days went by …..

As the weeks went by …..

As the months went by …..

Some Iggy's are aloof but I love people

Some Iggy’s are aloof but I love people

One day I discovered that I was staying with Leslie and I was SOOOO HAPPPY!I did a little Iggy dance.

I was now over a year old and FINALLY found my forever home.

I just knew this was where I was supposed to be.

I had helped Leslie, my new Mom, grieve for Sheba and soon we had to grieve my other sister, Jill.

Jill was a hound mix and we loved her very much.

Jill had always been there to snuggle up with me and keep me warm because I don’t have much fur and Iggy’s get real COLD!!

I really missed my two sisters, Sheba and Jill.

Leslie always made me feel part of the family

Leslie always made me feel part of the family

Mom knew I was sad.One day Mom heard about another Iggy that needed a new home. Well an Italian Greyhound / Chihuahua mix — can you imagine what that dog looked like???

So Mom asked me if we should adopt him and I said YES right away.

So Kismet, Kizzy for short, came to be my brother.

We got along really well and I was happy my little family was growing.

But I still needed something else – I just knew there was something else I was supposed to do with my Mom.

So we went to school and I became a Love Dog.

Just as I helped Mom study for her tests, she helped me study for mine.

We passed!

Now we can teach people about my very special breed of dog and how it sometimes takes time and several families to find just the right one.

And we all lived happily ever after!

How Joop Traveled the World to Find his True Home in Las Vegas

I am Joop, the world traveler

I am Joop, the world traveler

I am not a French Poodle.

I am not a French Bulldog.

But I am French.

I was actually born in Scotland nine years ago.

But lived in France most of my life.

I liked living in Paris but always wanted to travel around the world.

One day a nice man came to see me.

He was very tall and very handsome.

My Dad is very tall and handsome

My Dad is very tall and handsome

He liked me and thought I could be a good traveling companion.

So off we went.

We lived in Paris for a few years and then my Daddy decided we should go to Spain!

He got me a Passport so I could travel just like he does.

Spanish.

I was so proud of my Passport. Very few dogs have one.

I love to travel
I love to travel

Where  are all the places I have been with my Daddy?

Barcelona

Madrid

Marbella

Lisbon

London

Lucerne

And many, many small towns in France.

Then one day my Daddy decided we should take the biggest trip of all.

I loved my new home right away
I loved my new home right away

We came to America.

Wow!

We crossed over a very big ocean but I wasn’t scared.

I was used to flying on airplanes and it was great fun.

But when we got to American everything was different.

People sounded funny and the streets looked funny and the cars were funny.

But I love riding in the car and my Daddy even got me my own car seat.

I now went to new places in America, like San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Palm Springs, Sun Valley and guess where my favorite place is?

HOME in Henderson.

Smokey is my best friend
Smokey is my best friend

Daddy took me to a beautiful new house and I became best friends with the CAT next door!

Isn’t that silly?

Who ever thought a dog and a cat could be best friends?  But we are.

We take walks together every day and we eat together and we play together and we sit in the sun together and then we take a nap together.

Smokey and I now go on our own travels and explore new places every day.

Maybe one day Smokey will get a Passport.

I love children!
I love children!

Then one day Daddy decided we should go on another adventure, right here at home.

He said we could become a Delta Pet Partner Therapy Team and help people feel better.

So off we went!

School was fun and then I graduated and could go to all kinds of new places with Daddy.

My favorite part of any day - being with my Dad
My favorite part of any day – being with my Dad

I have traveled the world but it doesn’t matter where I am as long as I have my Daddy with me.

How Kirby Found his Forever Home

Kirby was such a lonely boy

Kirby was such a lonely boy

Once there was a little dog named Kirby.

He was a very lonely boy.

He lived on the street and every day he wondered why he didn’t have a family.

Kirby did not trust many people

Kirby did not trust many people

One day a nice man picked him up and brought him to a place called a Rescue.

He was there with lots of other dogs.

And every day another dog would go home with a new family.

But not Kirby.

Kirby was skinny and scared

Kirby was skinny and scared

Many people came to see him but no one wanted to take him home.

They said he was too much trouble.

Kirby was real skinny and had funny hair and had to pee all the time.

He had trouble walking and sounded like he was choking sometimes.

His legs, hips, pelvis and tail had been broken.

Kirby had many problems

Kirby had many problems

He had to take medicine and eat special food.

And he had the saddest eyes.

Because he had owies in his eyes so he couldn’t open them.

Kirby's new doctor helped him so much

Kirby's new doctor helped him so much

One day a nice lady decided she wanted to adopt a dog.

She wanted a little boy who was smart and kind and funny and could learn to be a Therapy Dog.

Soon Kirby was smiling and a happy little dog

Soon Kirby was smiling and a happy little dog

Kirby sounded like the perfect dog and she didn’t think he was too much trouble at all.

She loved him right away and he made her very happy.

Kirby went to a new doctor and had some operations to make him feel better.

He soon learned everything his new Mom could teach him and he loved riding in his stroller.

Kirby loved going to schools with his new mom

Kirby loved going to schools with his new mom

Kirby became a Therapy Dog and soon he was working every day, making people happy, and teaching them about adopting dogs and giving them new families.

Now Kirby knew why it took him so long to find his Forever Home – he had to wait for Sue to look for him.

Benny – the dog who couldn’t love

Benny had such a sad, angry look when we met
Benny had such a sad, angry look when we met

Have you ever met a dog who couldn’t love?

Who couldn’t look people in the eye?

Who couldn’t hug and kiss and snuggle and cuddle?

Benny was that dog.

He had many homes but no one wanted to keep him.

They said he was T R O U BL E

They said he was mean

Benny never made direct eye contact with anyone

Benny never made direct eye contact with anyone

They said he was crazy

They said he was B A D

He could jump so high he did a somersault in the air

And he could run so fast no one could catch him

And he could wiggle and jiggle

The first time Benny made direct eye contact - learning to trust

The first time Benny made direct eye contact - learning to trust

But one day a nice lady met Benny.

And she saw the love in his eyes.

He wasn’t bad or crazy or mean.

He was scared.

And nervous.

And afraid of people.

Benny soon learned to be happy and smile

Benny soon learned to be happy and smile

So she took him home and showed him how to Love

She taught him how to be a good dog

A smart dog

A happy dog

Benny learned how to trust people again and guess what?

Benny now loved everyone and became a therapy dog

Benny now loved everyone and became a therapy dog

After just six months something amazing happened

The dog who couldn’t love became a THERAPY DOG

Benny, the scared, mean, crazy dog now shared his new love with others and learned the greatest lesson of all
